COMMON SUTURES AND THEIR USES

Knowledge of  common sutures used  in  suturing  a patient during operation or in hospital is very essential for Nurse . There are various sutures used in hospital . some of sutures are absorable and some of them  are  non absorable .

Today you will able to learn about various types of sutures and their uses which are commonly used during  major surgeries and also in minor surgeries . you will able  know their uses and thier types .

This will help in your competition examination as well as in your clinical posting in operation theatre ( OT )  and minor OT . It will give you basic knowledge about sutures and therir uses . All These Will help in cracking Nursing Officer / staff Nurse examination like AIIMS NORCET  , PGIMER, DSSSB , RAILWAY, ESIC , GMCH And other STATE EXAMINATION

COMMON SUTURES AND THEIR USES

SUTURES uses

                   ABSORABLE SUTURES

1. PLAIN CATGUT ( 7 DAY CATGUT ) :-

  • Catgut is derived from the sub mucosa of the sheep intestine .
  • The plain catgut lasts 7 to 10 days .hence its use is minimal .
  • It can be used to put  fat stiches (Subcutaneous fat ) .
  • It is biological, absorable and monofilament suture material .
  • Colour of plain catgut is    YELLOW

2. CHROMIC  CATGUT ( 21 DAYS CATGUT ) :-

  • When  plain catgut is mixed with chromic salts , chromic catgut is obtainned .
  • The strenth of chromic catgut is abt 15 – 25 days .
  • Used in intestinal anastomosis, closure of urinary bladder , closure of common bile duct.
  • It is biological, absorable and monofilament suture material .
  • The catgut is preserved in 70 %  alcohol and kept soft due to 5 % glycerine .
  • Colour of CHROMIC CATGUT IS  BROWN .

3. VICRYL ( POLYGLACTIN ) :-

  • Vicryl  is copolymer of glycolide and lactide .
  • Vicryl is synthetic and absorable suture
  • Vicryl  is absorbed by hydrolysis .
  • Vicryl in small ontestine and colonic anastomosis .
  • Being synthetic tissue reaction is less than chromic catgut .
  • vicryl can be used in presence of infection .
  • Colour of vicryl  is violet

4 . DEXON  (POLYGLYCOLIC ACID ) :-

  • Dexon or polyglycolic acid  is synthetic absorable
  • Braided
  • Dexon or polyglycolic acid used like vicryl .
  •  colour of dexon is creamy yellow

5 . PDS ( POLYDIOXANONE SUTURE )

  • It is vicryl
  • costly
  • creamy in colour

                     NONABSORABLE SUTURES

1 . PROLENE  : –

  • It is polypropylene and nonabsorable
  • It is non filament, Artificial and uncoated
  • Chances of infection are less in prolene use
  • used in abdominal closure , repair of hernias .
  • colour of prolene is BLUE

2 . SUTUPACK :-

  • Sutupack  is nonfilament or multifilament polyamide .
  • Sutupack uses are similar to prolene
  • Colour of sutupack Black

3 . MERSILK :-

  • Mersilk  is Nonabsorable , braided silk
  • Mersilk is Black in colour
  • Mersilk is provided with round body needle
  • Mersilk is used in ligating bleeding points or anastomosis

4 . BLACK SILK : –

  • Black Silk is Nonabsorable suture
  • Black Silk  is derived from cocoon of silkworm larva .
  • Tissue reaction is more with black silk bcz it is a foreign protein
  • Black in colour

5 . COTTON : –

  • White in colour
  • Multifilament
  • infection rate is high
  • Cottton is Nonabsorable and cheap
